    About 1-Ton Pickup Trucks

The first pickups were created in 1913 when the Galion Allsteel Body Company of Galion, Ohio, began to do aftermarket conversions of Ford Model Ts to include hauling boxes. Today, pickups make up approximately 20% of all vehicles sold in the United States.

Pickup trucks are often categorized by their payload and towing capacities, such as 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton. These designations, which were once directly tied to the difference between a truck’s weight and its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), are today used more as general descriptors to help consumers differentiate between trucks’ capabilities. In a way, you can think of 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton pickups as good, better, and best with regard to payload and towing capacity.

As such, 1-ton pickups are a common sight on commercial construction sites, road construction projects, farms and ranches, and other jobsites that require lots of heavy equipment and materials hauled and/or towed in.

1-Ton Pickup Truck Features & Configurations

1-ton pickups often come with many of the features contractors and other professionals need to haul heavy loads, including single or dual rear wheels, powerful turbo-diesel engines, fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitches, and trailer brake and taillight connections, as well as numerous high-tech trailer assist features that make hitching up and towing easier.

The most popular 1-ton on TruckPaper.com, the Ford F-350 Super Duty, comes in Ford’s XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trim levels, depending on your desired cab and bed size, and with either single or dual rear wheels. The base XL package comes standard with a 6.8-liter gas V8 engine but can optionally be equipped with a 7.3-L V8, a 6.7-L Power Stroke V8 turbo-diesel, or a 6.7-L High-Output Power Stroke turbo-diesel. Ford mates these engines with a TorqShift 10-speed automatic transmission with selectable drive modes.

The high-end Limited Super Duty comes standard with the High-Output Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8, heated and ventilated leather seats, a twin-panel power moonroof, deployable running boards, a power tailgate, Ford’s 12-inch digital instrument panel with head-up display, and the Sync infotainment system with 12-inch touchscreen. The truck also boasts Ford’s Tow Technology Package, which includes lane-keeping assist, the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system, and trailer reverse guidance.

Chevrolet’s Silverado HD 3500, which can tow up to 36,000 pounds when properly equipped, comes in two- and four-wheel-drive versions with single or dual rear wheels. It’s available in WT, LT, LTZ, and High Country trim levels with 6.6-L gas V8 or 6.6-L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engines and 10-speed Allison automatic transmissions. The WT and LT can also be spec’d with an Allison transmission with integrated Power Take-Off (PTO).

The Silverado HD 3500 High Country provides perforated leather seats and other in-cab amenities, and comes in an optional Midnight Edition package, which includes black paint, 20-inch high-gloss black wheels, black beltline body moldings, and more.
