Water Tank Truck Sizes & Capacities

New and used water tank trucks are often categorized according to their tank capacity and truck size, and as with other tank truck varieties, many, if not most, are medium- and heavy-duty models with gross vehicle weights (GVWs) ranging from 14,000 to more than 26,000 pounds (6350 to more than 11,793 kilograms). Medium-duty models typically have tanks with capacities of around 2,000 gallons (7,500 liters).

The tanks on water tank trucks are available in aluminum, steel, or plastic varieties, typically incorporating multiple compartments to help stabilize the load during transfer. The water tanks are almost always cylindrical or elliptical to maximize capacity, stability, and durability, as well as ease of cleaning. Freightliner’s Business Class M2 106, one of the most popular water tank truck models, can be equipped with a 2,000-gal steel water tank with a modified ellipse design and large-radius corners.
