In the medium-duty tank truck market segment, vacuum tankers typically have tanks with approximately 800 to 2,500 gallons (3,030 to 9,460 liters) of capacity, with some smaller and larger exceptions.

A truck’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) generally determines the size of tank it can safely carry. Vacuum tank trucks in the medium-duty truck category have GVWRs ranging from 14,000 to 26,000 pounds (6,350 to 11,793 kilograms).
