About Cargo & Straight Box Trucks

These medium-duty trucks have a hard-sided, dry van box attached to the chassis behind the cab that often measures 16 to 26 feet (4.9 to 7.9 meters) long and 6.5 to 8.25 ft (2 to 2.5 m) tall inside. Although boxes vary in size and features, they’re generally designed to haul cargo and are often used to carry out local and regional deliveries.

2026 Freightliner Business Class M2 106 Cargo Box Truck

Depending on the model, the body may have a roll-up rear door, rear barn doors, a curbside door, and/or a roadside door. This differs from the cargo box of a curtainside truck, which has flexible, fabric sides that roll up for loading and unloading. Cargo trucks and straight box trucks are typically larger than cutaway-cube box trucks, more commercial delivery-oriented than moving box trucks, and not refrigerated like a reefer truck.

Cargo & Straight Box Truck Features

Although larger types of box trucks are often heavy-duty models, cargo trucks and straight box trucks are generally medium-duty, Class 4, 5, or 6 vehicles. Models with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 26,001 pounds (11,794 kilograms) typically do not require a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to drive.

Diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, a standard conventional cab, a 4x2 drivetrain, air ride or spring suspensions, and lift gates are common features of cargo and straight box trucks.

Popular Cargo & Straight Box Truck Models

Freightliner Business Class M2 106 box trucks are very popular in this category. A late-model M2 106 Plus provides options for up to 360 horsepower (268 kilowatts) and 1,150 pounds-foot (1,559 newton-meters) of torque, plus driver convenience and safety features like a 2,500-inch2 (1.6-meter2) windshield and active brake assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and side guard assist systems.

The International MV offers Cummins B6.7 or L9 diesel engine options with up to 360 HP and 1,150 lbf-ft of torque, plus automatic or manual Allison and Eaton transmission choices and Bendix Wingman Fusion and Bendix BlindSpotter active safety options. Cargo and straight box trucks are commonly built on the Isuzu NPR platform as well.
